The outrage expressed by many Americans in response to the sexual abuse scandal at Pennsylvania State University is reason for optimism.
These days, it seems that Americans are outraged by very little other than ATM fees and Hank Williams, Jr. One might have expected the Reality TV Nation to respond to the crime the way University officials did: put it out of mind and move on. That Americans are still capable of outrage over those things that are truly outrageous, is, well, encouraging. It is a sign that our moral sensibilities are not dead yet.
Still, given the rate that we are moving, one wonders if the next generation will be outraged by such things, too. Or will their version of Glee have a Jerry Sandusky shower scene?
