Men and Their Toys

A few weeks ago my family gave me a Kindle 2 for my birthday. I love it. The Kindle 2 is an electronic book. Sleek, easy to use, convenient, it is everything I like in a gadget. Like many men, I love gadgets. Think about it—most sports or hobbies that men participate in involve gadgets: hunting, cycling, fishing, golf, etc. These extra-curricular activities require the initial investment for the gun, the bike, the fishing rod and so on, but then there are an endless array of “add-ons” and upgrades. For instance, I enjoy cycling. My first serious road bike was a Schwinn. Well, I thought it was serious, until I got out on the road and saw what serious cyclists were riding. It was then that I realized my disadvantage. Soon, you are researching the latest version of what you “need”, lest some fellow pass you and kick sand in your face. As much as men complain about women and shopping, the fact is, men are just as bad; it just manifests itself in different ways with us. Instead of shopping for clothes or home decorations, we look for the best smart phone and computer upgrades; we walk the isles at the Bass Pro Shop and Home Depot; and we read magazines like Road & Track and Sports Illustrated. Lauri is always a bit anxious when I take up a hobby. She sees it as the thin end of the wedge—Upgrades, upgrades, upgrades. I’ve just taken up astronomy. No need for her to worry about that one. I’m perfectly satisfied with my telescope. Although I did see a guy who had this cool GPS device that finds and identifies stars and constellations. I wonder how much he paid for that? |
