More below... Fixed Point Foundation is committed to publicly defending Christianity through education, events, and the development of innovative resources that empower Christians and challenge skeptics. Whether it is our traditional concepts of human dignity and purpose or our understanding of what constitutes right and wrong, Christianity has served as the primary source of inspiration, giving light to law, government, the arts and sciences—indeed, giving light to what Dostoevsky called, “The Eternal Questions.”
That we have gradually lost sight of our Christian heritage is obvious even to the casual observer. In recent decades, however, we have witnessed aggressive efforts to demolish it systematically. Complicating matters is the fact that many Christians have imbibed any number of erroneous assumptions concerning their own faith, such as: Christianity lacks intellectual credibility; the Bible contradicts science; sincerity matters more than truth; Christian ethics cannot cope with the complexities of modern life; Jesus Christ is a way rather than the way; “diversity” is a value and “tolerance” means anything goes; and the list goes on.
Yet the mandate is clear. Jesus said, “And you shall love the Lord your God with all of your heart and with all of your soul and with all of your mind and with all of your strength.” (Mark 12:30) Unfortunately, many in the Church have ceased to love God with their minds. As a consequence, a substantive public Christian response to these trends has been absent to such a degree that one major newspaper asked pointedly, “Won’t anyone stand up for God?” Fixed Point Foundation was established in 2004 with precisely this end in view and the results have been extraordinary. We have sponsored highly publicized events at universities ranging from Oxford to UAB and our resources are being used in universities, schools, and churches around the world. Fixed Point is an expression of the Church speaking into the culture, challenging the unbelief of skeptics and restoring the Christian’s confidence that the Bible is precisely what it claims to be—True.
Bestselling author and cultural commentator Dinesh D’Souza observed, “Most of what is counted as ‘apologetics’ is stuck in the Christian subculture. What makes Fixed Point unique is that they have managed to break free from a traditional model and take a confident Christianity into the world.”
Remaining comfortably insulated from the people and ideas that are hostile to Christianity is not what we are about. On the contrary, we have engaged some of the most vitriolic opponents of the Christian faith. Yet we have done so “with gentleness and respect” (I Peter 3:15) and without compromise. Even these have recognized, if somewhat backhandedly, the significance of our work: “Fixed Point has an honesty, and an integrity that belies its Christian heritage.”
Richard Dawkins, atheist and scientist, Oxford University
“Seeking vainly to be a still center in a turning world, Fixed Point nonetheless succeeds in upholding a very high standard of fairness and care in the presentation of the issues.”
Christopher Hitchens, atheist, journalist, and bestselling author
“Fixed Point is providing a valuable service, in bringing some of the Big Issues – about the existence of God, and the possibility of morality without God - to large audiences. Too often, speakers on these topics are preaching to the choir. With the debate format that Fixed Point promotes, that doesn’t happen, and the result can be a genuinely educational experience, just the kind of thing that should be part of university life.”
Peter Singer, atheist and bioethicist, Princeton University Furthermore, reports on our work have appeared in the Wall Street Journal, The Times (of London), on BBC radio and television, NPR, and Fox News Network, among many others.
In a politically correct world, thoughtful, civil discourse has been largely suppressed, while Christianity is relegated to the cultural backwaters. Just as the Greek agora or the old town square served as places of dialogue, Latimer House is a unique initiative to bridge this conversational gap between Christianity and secular culture. Named for the sixteenth century English Reformer and martyr, Hugh Latimer, it presently hosts a number of Bible studies, discussion groups, luncheons, lectures, and a variety of other Fixed Point events. It also serves as our office. Don’t let the word foundation fool you. Like any 501(c)(3) charitable organization, we rely on the support of those people and institutions that believe in our mission. The vast majority of our funding comes from individuals. In II Corinthians, the Apostle Paul tells the Corinthians that it was the support of others that enabled him to serve them. Similarly, we frequently receive invitations from organizations and groups that do not compensate us for our work. Consequently, we must rely on those people whose tithes enable us to go where financial considerations might prove prohibitive. For more information, click here. Our executive director and founder, Larry Taunton, travels widely speaking in universities, churches, and to civic groups on issues of faith and culture. He is Executive Producer of the films “Science and the God Question” (2007), “The God Delusion Debate” (2007), “God on Trial” (2008), “Has Science Buried God?” (2008), “Can Atheism Save Europe?” (2009), and “Is God Great?” (2009). He has engaged some of the world’s leading intellectuals, religious and skeptics alike, and has a deep passion for the ideas that shape our world.
